Lego Mindstorms Robotics basically started back in 1994 when a programmable brick was created by the MIT Media Lab.It contained building instructions as well as the parts to build a fun,fully functional robot.

Lego Mindstorms Project as an Educational Tool

Not only are Lego Mindstorms kits sold to consumers, but it is sold as an educational tool to schools as well. This was brought about by a partnership between MIT as well as Lego. This educational robotics kit is called Lego Mindstorms for schools. It uses programming software called ROBOLAB GUI.

A big benefit of the software that is used in the educational as well as normal series is that it can be replaced by third party programming languages such as Java that are used by most professionals in the industry. The only difference between the “Challenge Set” – which is the educational series and the “Inventor Set”, is that the educational series have more gearing options as well as an additional light sensor.

Currently we are in the third version of Lego Mindstorms.The first version were called the Robotics Invention System which contained one light sensor as well as two touch sensors and motors.

Students from 8 districts in the San Antonio district got to earn some college credits with the help of Lego Mindstorms.

“For the final project, students customized and programmed the Lego Mindstorms NXT robots using light, touch and ultrasonic sensors to measure distance and detect and react to opponents while trying to keep their robot from being pushed out of the competition ring. The winning team was Brandon Moya and Chris Tubb  with their robot  Fearless Coward.”

While robots have long been a major part of science fiction lore and literature from Blade Runner to Star Trek, we’re a long way from being to that point. That said, robotics is a recognized field which has undergone many advances over the past half a century and has affected everything from how homes are cleaned to sending movable probes and satellites to explore the surface of Mars.

To put it in a technically accurate and succinct way:

Robotics is the branch of technology which specifically deals with the construction, designing, operation, structure, manufacturing, and use robots and robotic technology.

This field often crosses multiple areas of expertise and sciences including electronics, engineering, software, and even mechanics or mechanical engineering.

There are many different types of robots which focus on working in an equally wide array of fields. That being said, there are certain commonalities that many robots share and which could be argued help make up the basics of modern robotics.

  • Virtually all robots have movable bodies that move by mechanical means.
  • All robots also have computer programming to some degree and require a battery to keep charged.
  • Many robots have some type of sensor or can be reprogrammed, but this is not true in all cases.

The major difference between the inner workings of many of these robots is the way each goes about providing the main issues of programming, movement, and energy. One robot might use solar cells to constantly grab energy from sunlight and recharge batteries while outside, while another might use a hydraulic or pneumatic form of energy to allow for movement. Some robots will be very simple and have only one locked in program while others can be programmed for a wide variety of tasks.

At its heart, robotics basics come down to improving technology and science as improving the array and uses of robots available depends heavily on consistent technological advances and the use of science to make the inner workings more efficient. While we’re a long way from seeing working functioning robots who look human just like the types many people are used to seeing in the science fiction movies, many robot designs are moving in that direction. Engineering also enjoys a major part in working robotics. Advancements in designs come from figuring out better and better ways of making a robot or robotic function more efficient and stable.

Anyone looking to get into basic robotics either as a hobby or as a possible career will need to study engineering, not to mention a solid understanding of electronics. Without understanding either of these, you’re not going to have a chance of building decent functioning robots. The technology is going to keep changing and what’s considered robotics basics are going to keep changing with these advances. If you have any doubt of that at all, keep in mind that even the word “robot” and “robotics” didn’t even exist until the 1920s, and that was as a science fiction concept. In less than a century, what a long way robots have come!

Tomy, WowWee, Hasbro, and Lego are some of the larger companies that make Robotics Kits. The first generation version Robotics Kits were created in the mid 1980’s, by Tomy. This robotic toy was known as the Tomy Omnibot. Radio Shack also had a private label version known as Robie Sr. While these toys are no longer considered to be leading edge technology, they have developed quite a cult following. These toys even had built in cassette players that could record and playback audio sequences.

With the advancement of semiconductor technology, plummeting ram prices, and increases in CPU power, computerization is becoming increasing common. Even microwave ovens are now created with computers, which help determine optimum cooking temperature.

One of the better-known models is the Tomy I-Sobot. This model has incredibly smooth movement, similar to what you would find from the Honda Asimo. The Asimo was created by Honda as part of a large robotics project, and is the most advanced robot. The Asimo is not a toy, but rather it is a multi million-dollar R&D project from Honda. The key to having realistic RC Robot movement is a combination of sensors, micro step servomotors, and extensive computer programming.

i-Sobot has extremely realistic movement, due to the large number of actuators, motors, and gyroscopic sensor. The TOMY RC Robot has over 17 servo motors, and 19 IC chips which work together to help this machine provide its lifelike movement.

The I-Sobot has the ability to mimic walking, and dancing style movements including the ability to simulate hula dances, karate kicks, and will also respond to commands on the fly using the LCD remote.

As homage to movie lovers, there is even a pre-programmed sequence that allows I-Sobot to perform a re-enactment of the “Go ahead, make my day” sequence from the Clint Eastwood Dirty Harry movie.

In addition to amazingly lifelike movements, the robot also has the ability to speak, and has a built in vocabulary of more than 200 words and phrases. This toy is very unique, and will do a better job of holding a child’s attention compared to simple toys such as Tickle Me Elmo.

Tamiya RC cars were first

Tamiya was the very first in large manufacturing of high-performance Radio Control Vehicles. Tamiya is the kind of Retro-Classic manufacturer you can rely on at any time to build durable, reliable, and race-proven vehicles. Tamiya builds all kinds of vehicles for all kinds of bashing or racing conditions, such as monster trucks, buggies, truggies, on-road cars and pavement racers, along with many more options in both Nitro and Electric versions! These grade “A” engineer marvels design vehicles like no other. Tamiya engineers are constantly working and improving on model designs and vehicle features. While Tamiya is up-to-date with the latest in brushless technology accompanied by Nitro innovations, they also strive for the “classics”.

The Classic Tamiya Avante

Just recently, Tamiya updated one of their original late 1970’s models, the “Avante”, with a 2011 re-release. The Avante was a gigantic success back in its day, and the 2011 Re-Release looks to be just as successful. While keeping the original stance, feel and look of the Avante, Tamiya managed to engineer an entirely new vehicle! The newer model sports incredible features such as full time four-wheel-drive, incredibly soft fully-independent four-wheel suspension, and oil-filled differentials to create a durable drive train.

Tamiya products are disappearing

Tamiya has definitely proved themselves in the modern RC world, but their products are beginning to disappear from Hobby Shop Shelves. No one quite knows why this is, but it seems if Tamiya is beginning to fail. Every day more and more shops refuse to carry Tamiya merchandise and or products. More and More RC enthusiasts are outraged by this phenomenon every day, but Tamiya’s decay never falters. Many of these RC enthusiasts own shops of their own and are enlisted in forums such as UltimateRC.com, and are asked by many of the forum users to carry the Tamiya products in their establishments, but many simply cannot afford the overseas shipping.

A well respected UltimateRC forum user: Bigwreen, is looking to open an E-commerce site called HiddenHobbies.com. After many requests to carry Tamiya products, Bigwreen has considered the idea and will announce his decision soon on the forum. As a last note, Tamiya is very humorous about their product promotions, so if you enjoy their products, sit back, and search on Youtube for their promotions, and listen to the sound of a 1980’s TV announcer voice as he describes every detail of the vehicle. In conclusion, Tamiya is a proud, reliable company; and it would be quite a shame to see them disappear off of the Radio Control Marketplace.
